The six-category order
| Order | Hand | Example | Recognition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Trail / trio | 9♠ 9♥ 9♦ | Three equal ranks |
| 2 | Pure sequence | J♥ 10♥ 9♥ | Consecutive; one suit |
| 3 | Sequence / run | 8♠ 7♥ 6♣ | Consecutive; mixed suits |
| 4 | Colour / flush | K♦ 9♦ 5♦ | One suit; not consecutive |
| 5 | Pair | 6♠ 6♦ Q♣ | Two equal ranks |
| 6 | High card | K♣ J♦ 4♠ | None of the above |
A-2-3 versus A-K-Q: choose a rule first
House conventions differ. In one, A-2-3 outranks A-K-Q; in another, A-K-Q is first and A-2-3 second. Some groups put A-2-3 below 2-3-4. Our hand comparator lets you select all three conventions and displays the one in use. It never silently assumes an app setting.
K-A-2 is not treated as a sequence in this tool. Suits do not break an otherwise equal comparison. Actual show or sideshow rules may resolve equal hands differently.
Work through three original comparisons
| Hand A | Hand B | Classic comparison |
|---|---|---|
| 2♠ 2♥ 2♦ | A♣ K♣ Q♣ | A: trail outranks every pure sequence |
| Q♠ Q♦ 3♥ | J♣ J♥ A♦ | A: compare the pair before the spare card |
| K♠ 9♠ 5♠ | K♥ 9♥ 4♥ | A: the first two cards tie; compare the third |
Try altering just one card at a time. Changing 5♠ to 4♠ in the last example creates equal ranked colours under a rule that does not rank suits. That is a hand-strength tie, not automatically a split-pot instruction.
Avoid these recognition mistakes
- Two red cards and a black card are not “colour”. A colour requires one suit.
- Three nearby values are not necessarily consecutive: 10-8-7 skips 9.
- A same-suit run belongs to pure sequence, not ordinary colour.
- A high ace does not override a stronger hand category.
Check the result yourself
Name the category of each hand before looking at its highest card. If the categories match, compare the relevant rank tuple: trio rank; sequence order; descending cards for colour/high card; pair rank then kicker. Use the local comparison tool to test the examples without an account.

Common questions
Does a sequence beat colour?
Yes under the classic category order shown here. A no-joker sequence is above a colour.
Is A-2-3 always the strongest sequence?
No universal convention is assumed. Agree the house rule before comparing; the tool offers three explicit options.
